Holiday Wish List

Christmas is just around the corner, and in an effort to not be a Grinch this year, I have decided to get into the holiday spirit. Christmas was my favourite when I was a kid but as I got older, with the realization that Santa Claus is not real (although deep down I like to think he is), the plastic excuse for a tree, and the number of other things that made it less and less special over the years, it was hard to stay in the spirit of the holidays.

This year I have decided to change the pace and get excited about the holidays again. It is a time for family and friends to be together and there are so many things to do over the holiday season that make it just as much fun as when we were all kids. Plus, being old enough to have spiked eggnog makes it that much better. I even have a holiday activity wish list that is coming along quite nicely! Granted I will be finishing up the semester before I can even think of half these activities, but once the semester is done and exams are a thing of the past, you better believe I am jam packing my December with holiday fun!

My Holiday Activity Wish List:
Christmas train
VanDusen Gardens
Crafting (yeah, that’s right, crafting)
Holiday movie marathon with treats
Baking
Decorating, duh
Seeing the Nutcracker for the first time
Making gingerbread houses
The Christmas craft fair
Capilano Suspension Bridge lights
Outdoor ice skating at Robson Square
Grouse Mountain’s Peak of Christmas

Granted, I will probably have a bit more added to this list as it gets closer to Christmas, but I feel like it is a good start for getting in the spirit. Better than I have done in the last coupe of years at least, so I am saying goodbye to the bah, humbug Grinch-like me, and hello to a reborn holiday lover me! Stay tuned for new holiday posts!

Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving has arrived! Well, for us Canadians at least. With all the turkey, ham, gravy, and pumpkin pie it's hard to find an outfit that is going to be comfortable. Especially if you are like me and end up getting not just seconds, but thirds as well (and that was before dessert). I thought about wearing something different until I realised how much food I would potentially be eating. So, I opted for something loose and comfy so as not to have to undo my pants at the end of the meal.
I love holidays, especially when it means a family dinner is going to happen. The food is always so yummy and I can never get enough. The only thing missing at last night's dinner was the potatoes, which was slightly upsetting, but thankfully I can have a chance to get some tonight! Can you tell I like my carbs?
But back to the outfit. It was a chilly day because fall has finally decided to grace us with its presence. I opted for black shorts, black thigh high socks, a plaid shirt and black suede booties with my black coat with leather details. It was incredibly comfortable but still stylish, which is what I love because really, who wants to be uncomfortable? I have put details of where all the items I am wearing are from after the photos.
I hope you guys enjoy and have a happy Thanksgiving!!

Under Construction

After many months being absent from the blog world, I have decided to get back to it, but with a new twist. Instead of focusing on the fashion industry, I would like to expand my horizons and blog about anything and everything! It is time to start a new chapter and I am so excited about it. Maybe this time I will even be able to keep it up and post on the regular instead of once in a blue moon!
There are so many different subjects and topics that I am interested in that I could no longer limit myself to fashion and beauty. I am obsessed with anything to do with science and space, which I am pretty sure stemmed for my love of Star Wars, so there will be some nerdy posts as well as posts about food, places, movies and much more. Don't think I wont be adding some fashion and beauty entries in though, I am still all about that!
Stay tuned because once everything is sorted and out of the construction phase, I will be right back at this blogging business!
Well, hopefully...

Easter weekend fashion

Easter weekend is upon us, and with dinners and parties it can get pretty hectic. Planning outfits for every event this weekend can get stressful, but it can also be super exciting to show off those new spring clothes! Trends for this season are awesome and easy to pair together with all the black and white that has been out there. An easy way to put together a fresh spring look is to wear black and white and then have a pop of colour, whether it is a top, shoes or an accessory or two.
Keep it fun and fresh and throw in some floral pieces to really bring the spring vibe to life. You can never go wrong with a nice dress for Easter dinner and to dress it up if it is a little more on the casual side, toss on a blazer and slip into a nice pair of heels! If you are anything like me though, it might be a good idea to wear something that doesn't fit too snug on your body. I tend to overeat at family dinners so I always have to remember to wear something a little more on the loose-fitting side. A loose blouse with pants is great, especially if you have a white blouse with pants that are bright or even patterned. A pantsuit can also be great for those dressier Easter events where if you do not want to wear a dress, a pantsuit is still fabulous!
When it comes to Easter beauty, you can't go wrong with a lip colour that pops. Orange is all the rage for spring and there are so many shades that everyone can find the right shade of orange! A good way to have your lipstick last through eating and drinking is to choose a long wearing lip colour, or even a matte lipstick. Matte colours tend to last a lot longer, and contrary to popular belief, not all of them dry out the lips.  A lot of brands put moisturizers in their matte lipsticks so that it feels soft and moisturizing and wont dry out your lips.
Play around with the trends and make them your own with your own style. Remember to have fun with fashion and beauty! Drink some champagne and go on those Easter egg hunts and I hope all of you have an amazing Easter weekend filled with good food and drinks!

VanStyle

On Friday, March 28, 2014, I had the pleasure of attending the second annual VanStyle fashion show. It was so awesome to be invited to this event that showcased some great designers. The show this year was held after the craziness of Vancouver Fashion Week calmed down and the venue was Caprice nightclub. Unfortunately, my photos did not turn out at all and I could not get a photographer for the night so the photos that I have posted are from Mike Phang photography (visit www.mikephang.com for more photos from the event as well as from VFW) and from the Vanstyle Facebook page.
The red carpet was rolled out for the guests and the show ended up having a great turnout. I got to meet some fellow fashion bloggers (who post more than I do, of course) and watch a well put together event. The designers that were showcased were Brandy Melville, Skout, Sofia, Arcane Fashion, Ego Closet, and Marianne Greaves. There are plenty more photos of the pieces that were showcased by the designers on the VanStyle website (www.vanstyled.com) so I highly recommend checking it out to see great photos from the show.
The MC for the event did an awesome job and both of the singers that were performing between designers were so good. Everyone that was involved in the show did such an amazing job and I want to thank Nicole Wong for inviting me to this event. I had a blast and I hope to be a part of it again in the future!

2014 Oscars Best and Worst Dressed

Last night was the 86th Annual Academy Awards, aka the biggest night in Hollywood. Everyone dresses to impress in their most fabulous gowns of the season. But unfortunately, they can't all be out of this world amazing. There have to be some losers in the fashion game of who had the best gown. I do have to say though, there were a lot of gowns that would have been easily overlooked if it hadn't been for the stars wearing them.
While I felt there were a lot of neutrals this year, there was also the usual pop of colour, like Jennifer Lawrence in red and Viola Davis in teal. some gowns were simple and while simple can sometimes be stunning, there were some gowns where simple just was not Oscar-worthy. So here is a list of my personal top ten picks for best and worst dressed and last nights awards show.

BEST DRESSED
Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen

Chrissy Teigen in Monique Lhuillier

Laura Dern in Alberta Ferretti

Meryl Streep in Lanvin

Goldie Hawn in a champagne gold gown

Kate Hudson in Versace

WORST DRESSED
Lady Gaga in Versace
We all know Lady Gaga just wants to shock everyone, but what I found shocking is how she got into this gown. The pose she is seen doing in the above photo is the only pose she could do to make it not look like she was spilling out of the dress. This gown looked gorgeous on the runway, but I have to say that it was not flattering on Miss Gaga.

Elsa Pataky in a teal gown
It pained me to see Elsa Pataky in this gown. She is so stunning and even though she is ready to pop out that baby, she could have chosen so many other options for the Oscars. She could have taken a tip from Kerri Washington and chosen a more flattering gown. This one makes her breasts look like they are sagging a little and if she extended an arm too far she could have had a wardrobe malfunction. This was such an awful choice for her.

Gabourey Sidibe in Theia
What is this!? As soon as I saw her walk out to present I choked on my Coca Cola! This has got to be one of the most unflattering gowns I have ever seen. I don't think anyone in the world could have gotten away with this dress! It is definitely at the top of the worst dressed.

Anne Hathaway in Gucci
Once again, Anne has gone for a pencil style gown. She seems to love this particular cut in a dress and while it does look good with her figure, the chest-plate looking design on the front is too much. The only thing about this dress that I like is that she learned from her mistake last year and didn't have it looking like she was high beaming everyone the entire time.

Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Haute Couture
I actually really like the bottom half of this gown. The top half is what I really do not like about it. While so many stars have chosen the neutral colours, they all kind of blended in with each other and did not look much different. This one however, was not flattering in the chest area. It at least made her look like she weighs more than 95 pounds, which is a good thing.

Emma Watson in Vera Wang
I was so disappointed with this! I love, love, LOVE Vera Wang and I think Emma Watson is so beautiful! This look however, was not Oscar-worthy at all. It looked like she was wearing a shimmery t-shirt with a full skirt. The Oscars are about glamour and this gown just screamed casual to me, and the colour just did not look good on her. She should have gone with all black, or something a little brighter.

Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta
I really like the way this dress moved when she walked, it was so fun! But it seemed like something that would have been more appropriate at the Golden Globes or the Emmys. The shoes she wore also a little too 90s for me. It is like the last century was fighting over which decade would get to be part of her Oscars look. This was definitely a dress that would have looked better if it was knee length, not full.

Sally Hawkins in Valentino
I did not like this dress at all. It looked way too heavy for her small frame and the sleeves were too long for her as well. It was also a little too busy for my liking. I know that a lot of stars went the simple route and their dresses got lost, but this one was too much. Not only that but I found her hair and makeup could have been a lot better as well. Overall, not a good look.

Cate Blanchett in Armani
At first I actually like this gown, but the more I looked at it the more I disliked it. I was waiting for those things attached to it to fly away or something. I wish it didn't have all of those things all over it. It might have looked a lot nicer if it was more simple with a single embellishment on it maybe. The bottom of the gown also, to me, resembled a bed skirt.

Julie Delpy in Jenny Packham
Did a spider make her gown? That was one of my first thoughts when I saw this. I feel like this gown aged her quite a bit as well. I wish it didn't have the spiderweb feature about it. I don't know if it was meant to catch flies or not because it did not get her any Oscars, nor did it get her put on the best dressed list. At least her hair and makeup lasted through the rain.

So there it is, me opinions for best and worst dressed at the 86th Annual Academy Awards. What was your picks?
